ARTIST BIO

Banele Khoza ( b. 1994, Hlatikulu, eSwatini) is a South African-based visual artist. He enrolled at the London International School of Fashion in Johannesburg, but soon realised his passion was drawing and ended up earning a BTech in Fine Arts from Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria. In 2017 he won the prestigious Gerard Sekoto Award and with it a three-month residency at the CIté Internationale des Arts in Paris, France.

In 2022 he completed a residency at Ampersand (NYC). His recent solo exhibitions include What’s Left Unsaid (2024, Goodman Gallery, ZA), How are you doing? (2023, BKhz, ZA), From South Africa (Dear Diary) (2022, kunsthaus göttingen, DE), Be-Pression (2022, Nil Gallery, Paris, FR), 27 (2022, BKhz, ZA) and It’s always been you (2021, Uitstalling Art Gallery, BE), among others. In 2019 his solo exhibition Seeking Love toured South African institutions across Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch and Potchefstroom. Khoza also headlined the solo exhibition titled LGBTQI+: Banele Khoza as part of the Curatorial Lab at Zeitz MOCAA (2018). In 2018 he curated A Letter to my 22 Year Old Self, a group show presented to launch his fundraising activities which will give grants to art students dealing with economic hardship at SA universities.

In 2018 Khoza opened doors to BKhz in Braamfontein, the gallery currently operates from the iconic Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank. For his work and contributions to the South African creative economy Khoza was honoured as one of the M&G 200 Young South Africans in 2019.
